Achieve A Balanced Working Life Part 3

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

What stops you enjoying more balance in your life? I’m choosing the word ‘enjoying’ deliberately, because so many people seem to find the pursuit of balance to be a struggle.

Many of my corporate coaching clients report difficulty in creating and sustaining a good balance between their professional life and their personal life.  This tension between work and home is often given the name ‘work/life balance’.  I detest this expression because it implies that somehow work is separate from the rest of life.  The reality is that our lives are like casseroles, and work is one of the major ingredients.

Got the Blues?

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Today, I noticed that a number of my coaching clients seemed a little down.  Some of them shared downright sadness.  Since I’ve been feeling a little down myself, it got me wondering if there’s something in the air today (apart from pollen!) creating a collective case of the blues.

How to Really Enjoy Daily Life

Monday, July 12th, 2010

About a year ago, I went for a walk with a group of friends on a Sunday afternoon.  I arrived for the walk tired and frazzled from the long car journey and preoccupied by my own thoughts.  A friend had brought her young daughter with her to the walk, and this child transformed my day in lasting ways.

The Joys of Jet Lag

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

I’m writing this blog post at 1am, completely unable to sleep after getting back from my ‘volcation’ in CA.  There is no doubt that it is very boring not being able to sleep when you want to, and when everyone else in your house is asleep, and when you know that you’re likely to be grumpy tomorrow.  At first, when I sat down to write this, I thought I might write something humorous about all the things that become dangerous when you have jet lag: sharp knives, difficult math problems, driving, tasks requiring accuracy, ironing (proximity to very hot thing, ditto cooking)…and then I started to muse on the blessings of jet lag.

The ‘Gap’ – Part 1

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Have you ever achieved something, and the minute you achieved it you wanted something else?  I sometimes think that our unending desires must be hardwired into our operating system as human beings.

Just this morning, I was out walking my dogs (where all my best thinking happens) and reflecting on some professional goals that I’ve recently achieved.  I was feeling great about my work, and noticing how the changes I’ve been making are bringing about outcomes that are pleasing to me in my day to day life.  Just as I was really noticing how good I was feeling, new desires stole up on me, and I glimpsed some new goals out on the horizon.

In praise of looking

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Tomorrow I’m going to be doing one of my favourite activities – taking a day off and spending it wandering around the National Gallery in London with a like-minded friend.  As some of you know, for many years I worked as an art historian with the National Trust.  I was very fortunate to do the work that I did, not least because I worked closely with beautiful things all day long.
