The In-between Times

Are you living in the ‘in-between’ times?  I remember reading this quote about a year ago and thinking ‘That’s me! That’s where I am right now!’  It seems to me that Marianne has a lovely way of summing up what being in a transition is like – we aren’t in the familiar place anymore, and we aren’t fully occupying a new place either.  When I really think about it, I know that I make transitions of this kind all the time, prompted either by external events or internal impulses.  Many times, these transitions are small, and they feel small too, and when this is the case my awareness of the in-between space is limited.

The Velvet Gutter

Ever wanted to make a change, but not done anything about it?  Ever known exactly what you wanted, yet hesitated when it was offered to you?  What about needing to do something, but procrastinating?

Not making changes is one of those weird self-inflicted games we play.  I remember, when I was working, harbouring an intense desire to leave and start my own business.  This feeling was with me all the time, and it intensified over the – drum roll please – 6 years it took before I did anything about it.  6 years is a LONG time to hold yourself back from something that you really want, so I claim a degree of expertise in this whole business of staying stuck.

Do you enjoy your work? Are you a little bit in love with the work that you do? If not, why not?

I’m very fortunate because I don’t just love what I do, I LOVE what I do. It wasn’t always this way however (and still isn’t always this way – although that’s a different blog post!). I spent a good portion of my life doing the work I thought I was supposed to do. What do I mean by that?
