Achieve A Balanced Working Life Part 1

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

If you’ve ever worked with a coach, you’ve probably been introduced to the idea of the balance wheel.  This is a popular coaching tool that’s used to help you take a snapshot of the major areas of your life: career, health, relationships, recreation etc.  A good coach will help you work with your wheel, asking you thought provoking questions to help you discern which areas of your life need attending to in order to bring about more balance.

The Secret To Empowered Decision Making

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

It’s sometimes helpful to remind ourselves that we have choices. A key to good coaching is remembering the power of choice, and reminding clients that they can always make choices.  In coaching terms, this is called ‘being at choice’, and it’s a state of mind.  Part of my job is to assist my clients in shifting their thinking so that they experience the empowerment that comes with making choices.

Communication Skills: Leadership is Influence

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Leadership is Influence. Nothing more, nothing less – John C. Macwell

What is influence? It’s intangible, yet we all know people who possess it.  Influence is separate from positional power.

Having a high position in an organisational hierarchy doesn’t automatically grant you influence.  We can all think of individuals in very senior roles who are consistently sidelined or unable to influence organisational strategy.  Influence has very little to do with executive authority, seniority, or length of service.  It’s much more to do with the ability to be persuasive with individuals and groups, to be heard when you speak, to get your ideas adopted, and to be able to get others to take action at your request – regardless of your position.

Leadership – Be a True Professional

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

The true professional is a person whose action points beyond his or herself to that underlying reality, that hidden wholeness, on which we all can rely – Margaret Wheatley, Finding Our Way

What is meant by the above quote, and how does it relate to leadership – of ourselves, others, and organisations?

In my work as a coach I spend a lot of time listening to people in positions of substantial responsibility.  They understand that their actions, words, and decisions have substantial consequences for others and for their organisation.  The wisest ones also understand the powerful impact of their habitual thought structures.  They know that their thoughts impact their emotional and physical state, which impact their behaviour, which impact how others perceive them and the results they get.

The Evolution of Our Decisions

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

‘We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning; for what in the morning was true will in evening become a lie’ C.G. Jung

I’ve always been a great believer in the importance of being decisive and committing to taking action.  For a long time, I’ve followed the belief that ‘you make a decision, and then you make the decision right’.  This is a great way of thinking for getting into motion, conquering hesitation, and being audacious about personal and organisational goals.  It’s a great way of approaching beginnings.
