Balance wheels are a coaching technique that can help you to assess the condition of your professional and personal life.
By using the wheel, you’ll be able to identify leverage points for creating better balance, greater happiness and satisfaction, and more of what you want. You can hear more about working with the balance wheel in my podcast, Getting The Balance Right.

It’s sometimes helpful to remind ourselves that we have choices. A key to good coaching is remembering the power of choice, and reminding clients that they can always make choices. In coaching terms, this is called ‘being at choice’, and it’s a state of mind. Part of my job is to assist my clients in shifting their thinking so that they experience the empowerment that comes with making choices.

I read a fascinating article recently about research into happiness. Scientists have identified that day to day happiness is a simple formula that has 5 ingredients. The good news is that all 5 are within our control.

How much space do you have in each day? How much unscheduled time, how many quiet moments, how often are you still? I’m constantly shocked at how much we all avoid empty space at all costs. Yet space is never truly ‘empty’.
Creating space in our day, and crossing a new frontier when we invite space into our lives can be a highly effective way of renewing energy and being more productive.

Good communication skills are key to helping you give better feedback, be more persuasive, elegantly disagree, and ensure that your message is clearly heard. This nitty gritty language tip is a useful communication skill – and it’s focus is on your use of the word AND.

‘We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning; for what in the morning was true will in evening become a lie’ C.G. Jung
I’ve always been a great believer in the importance of being decisive and committing to taking action. For a long time, I’ve followed the belief that ‘you make a decision, and then you make the decision right’. This is a great way of thinking for getting into motion, conquering hesitation, and being audacious about personal and organisational goals. It’s a great way of approaching beginnings.

‘Una alla volta’ – ‘One at a Time’ – is one of my Dad’s catchphrases. When I was a child, he would say it to calm me down and get me to focus. Clearly, it went ‘in’ as an instruction, as I catch myself saying it to myself all the time!
What does it really mean to do things ‘one at a time’? I sometimes think we’re more familiar with the opposite way of doing things: everything all at once, doing one thing while thinking about something else, doing something and wishing we were doing something else, speeding life up in general…all great ways of not being present in the moment.

‘Sometimes we are living in the in-between times: when we’re no longer who we used to be, but we haven’t yet arrived at our next stage either.’ Marianne Williamson
Are you living in the ‘in-between’ times? I remember reading this quote about a year ago and thinking ‘That’s me! That’s where I am right now!’ It seems to me that Marianne has a lovely way of summing up what being in a transition is like – we aren’t in the familiar place anymore, and we aren’t fully occupying a new place either. When I really think about it, I know that I make transitions of this kind all the time, prompted either by external events or internal impulses. Many times, these transitions are small, and they feel small too, and when this is the case my awareness of the in-between space is limited.
