This tip is a simple NLP (neuro linguistic programming) technique that you can use to:
Here’s how it works:
Imagine a painting in an elaborate gold frame. Notice both the painting itself and the frame. Now, in your mind’s eye, change the frame to a very modern plain black frame. Does the painting look different? Almost certainly it does, because you have changed its context.
It’s the same when you redecorate at home. Have you ever repainted a room, or got new curtains, and the room looked completely different? It looks different because you have changed the way it appears to you.
In NLP this way of changing things is called ‘reframing’. You can use reframing to describe a disagreeable task in a different way, so that you feel more positive about it. For example, at home I tend to refer to needing to do a ‘mountain of ironing’, which feels depressing. However, when I call it ‘listening to music time’, which is what I do when I’m ironing, then I actually look forward to doing it.
As a communicator, pay attention to the impact of your words. The information that you need to share is like the painting. The way you present the information, and the words you use to describe it, are the frame. Paint a positive picture, and frame it attractively, and you’ll find that you’ll get your audience on board.

Where does your focus tend to be? Making good choices about what we focus on has a powerful impact on the results we get. Have you ever got up in the morning, had one or two things go wrong early on, and ended up having a ‘bad day’? When we notice the things that go wrong, and invest energy in dwelling on them, our minds tend to seek more instances of the same thing. We generalise about the experience that we’re having, and then we end up with a ‘bad day’. This is all to do with powerful neurological filtering that takes place outside of our conscious awareness.

We’re often busy trying to do our best and get results, with no concrete way of knowing if we’re on track or off track. Many people in business spend all day long looking at numbers and measurements which may or may not be measuring the right things. Either way, it’s useful to consider what we should be measuring.
In NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) we use the key concept of the evidence procedure. This goes beyond most goal setting strategies.
