3 Easy Decision Making Techniques

Puzzle piece

Got a situation that you aren’t sure how to handle? Need to make an important decision? Confused by something or someone? Mentally going around in circles? This post is for you!

Traditional approaches to problem solving such as worrying, debating, discussing, and evaluating can be exhausting.  All of these thought processes use the conscious mind – the part of the brain that we’re aware of, that chatters to us all day long.

There is another source of creative intelligence available to use – the unconscious mind.  This is the part of our mind that organises our heartbeat, breathing, body temperature – even our dreams.  It’s easy to access this creative intelligence to produce clarity and fresh approaches to problems.  Here are 3 simple ways to do it.

  1. Do something physical. Distract your conscious mind by engaging in repetitive physical activity such as driving, filing, jogging, walking, gardening, ironing, or housework.  As your conscious mind relaxes, new ideas will come to you.  I have all my best ideas while sweeping the kitchen floor!
  2. Instruct your mind to solve the problem. Put the problem on your back burner, telling yourself when you want to have a solution.  Your subconscious mind will then work away on the problem while you do something else.  This is a great technique for reducing worry at bed time.  Simply tell yourself that when you wake up in the morning, you’ll know what to do about the problem.  Try it – it works.
  3. Trust your judgement. Sometimes we already know how to solve a problem, we just aren’t noticing what we know.  At other times, we choose to ignore our inner awareness because the solution will take us out of our comfort zone.  Trust your instincts.  They have something useful to tell you.

Notice how all of these solutions involve relaxing about the problem.  When we release tension, answers come.

Enjoy working with the power of your mind!

The Evolution of Our Decisions

‘We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning; for what in the morning was true will in evening become a lie’ C.G. Jung

I’ve always been a great believer in the importance of being decisive and committing to taking action.  For a long time, I’ve followed the belief that ‘you make a decision, and then you make the decision right’.  This is a great way of thinking for getting into motion, conquering hesitation, and being audacious about personal and organisational goals.  It’s a great way of approaching beginnings.

Tips for Consultants #1: Understand Why You Are There

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Sometimes, as a consultant, the ‘reason’ you are asked to get involved in a project isn’t the real reason.  Ever had the experience of getting involved with something, and part of the way through glimpsing an alternate reality where the project, and your role in it, is something different than you thought?

My dad’s wisdom – part 1

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

My Dad is one of life’s great diplomats.  His colleagues have consistently valued his calm, principled approach to the drama of working with other people.  I’ve learned a lot from his sensible, common sense approach to work – so much the opposite of my own tendency to extremes of thought, effort, and emotion.
